Our Commitment to Accessibility

The Canadian Space is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We are continually improving the user experience for all visitors and applying the relevant accessibility standards to ensure we provide equal access to everyone.

We believe that space exploration and science news should be accessible to all Canadians, regardless of ability. This commitment extends to our website, content, and the way we communicate with our community.

Conformance Status

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the Level AA standard. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities and more user-friendly for everyone.

We recognize that accessibility is an ongoing effort, and we continue to work toward improving our site’s accessibility features.

Accessibility Features

The Canadian Space website includes the following accessibility features:

Content and Structure

  • Semantic HTML: We use proper HTML5 elements (headings, lists, articles) to provide clear document structure for screen readers
  • Alternative Text: Images include descriptive alt text where possible, particularly for mission photos and diagrams
  • Headings: Content is organized with logical heading hierarchies (H1, H2, H3) for easy navigation
  • Link Context: Links include descriptive text that makes sense when read out of context
  • Readable Font Sizes: Text is sized appropriately and can be resized using browser zoom functions

Navigation

  • Keyboard Navigation: Our site can be navigated using keyboard-only controls (Tab, Enter, Arrow keys)
  • Skip Links: “Skip to content” links allow users to bypass navigation and jump directly to main content
  • Consistent Layout: Navigation elements remain consistent across pages
  • Clear Focus Indicators: Interactive elements show visible focus states when navigating with a keyboard

Visual Design

  • Colour Contrast: We strive to maintain sufficient colour contrast ratios between text and backgrounds
  • Responsive Design: Our site adapts to different screen sizes and devices
  • No Flashing Content: We avoid content that flashes or blinks at rates that could trigger seizures

Known Limitations

Despite our best efforts, some limitations may exist:

  • Third-Party Content: Embedded videos from YouTube, images from NASA/SpaceX/Rocket Lab, and content from external news sources may not always meet accessibility standards. We have limited control over third-party content but try to provide context and descriptions where possible
  • AI-Generated Content: Some of our content is generated by AI (“Robo Chris”). While we review this content, automated image descriptions or complex technical explanations may occasionally lack clarity
  • Historical Content: Older blog posts may not fully conform to current accessibility standards. We are working to update legacy content over time
  • External Links: Links to external websites (SpaceQ, SpaceNews, NASA, etc.) may lead to sites that don’t meet accessibility standards
  • Launch Schedule Data: Dynamic launch information pulled from APIs may have varying levels of accessibility depending on the source data

Assistive Technologies

The Canadian Space website is designed to be compatible with common assistive technologies, including:

  • Screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack)
  • Screen magnification software
  • Speech recognition software
  • Keyboard-only navigation
  • Browser text resizing and zoom features

Our site works best with recent versions of modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).
